The title “Hope” already gives the sense of the volume that
accompanies the Prix Pictet, the world prize for photography
and sustainability, which in the eighth cycle saw the triumph of
Joana Choumali, originally from Abidjan in Ivory Coast. «We
were inspired by the words of our founding president, Kof An-
nan, who in his last speech at the Prix Pictet spoke about the
potential for humanity to f nd hope in adversity and its deep
hope that it is not too late to remedy the catastrophic damage
to the natural world and its most vulnerable inhabitants ”, says
jury president Sir David King. “The works of the twelve f na-
list photographers underline the great hope of the Prix Pictet,
the bet we all make with the future, that art can inspire action
and triumph where words alone have failed” he continues. Will
photography, if not save the world, keep the debate on envi-
ronmental sustainability issues alive?
